Privacy Policy

newt is a hyperlocal "what's on near me" app for Newtown, Sydney. It shows happy hours, food specials and local events, and — with your permission — passively notices when you visit a local venue so you can keep a private history of your nights out. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your choices. We've tried to keep it plain.

The short version

• No account, no name, no email. newt works without a login. Your device is identified only by a random, anonymous ID generated on the device.
• Location is used for geofencing only — to notice arrivals/departures at a small set of venues. newt does not continuously track or record your movements, and does not build a location trail.
• We don't sell your data and we don't show ads.
• You can turn location off at any time in your device settings, or uninstall to remove the app's data from your device.

What we collect and why

Data	Why	How
Location (precise & background)	To detect when you arrive at and leave a participating venue (the core feature) and to measure how many people who saw an offer actually visited.	Via your device's power-efficient geofencing. The app reacts to "entered"/"exited" events for a small list of venues. It does not poll or stream your live location.
Anonymous device ID	To associate your visits, saved events and plans with your device without identifying you.	A random UUID created on first launch and stored on your device.
App activity (screens viewed, offers saved, visits, plans)	To run the features you use and to understand which features are useful.	Stored in our backend (Convex) against your anonymous ID.
Analytics & diagnostics	To fix crashes and improve reliability of background detection.	Product analytics, masked session replays and crash reports via PostHog (EU). Replays mask text/inputs.

Permissions we ask for

• Location — Allow all the time Needed so newt can notice venue visits even when the app is closed. Used only for venue geofencing.
• Notifications So newt can ask "Were you at [venue]?" after a visit and nudge you about saved events. These are scheduled on your device.

If you grant "While using the app" only, or deny location, newt still works for browsing what's on — only the passive visit detection is disabled.

Who we share data with

We use a small number of service providers ("processors") to run the app. They process data on our behalf and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes:

• Convex — our application backend (self-hosted), stores your visits, saved events and plans against your anonymous ID.
• PostHog (EU) — product analytics, crash reporting and masked session replay.
• Google Play — app distribution and (aggregate, non-identifying) crash/vitals reporting.

We do not sell or rent personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers.

Data retention

Visit, saved-event and plan records are kept while the app is in use so we can show your history. Analytics and diagnostic data are retained for up to 12 months. You can request deletion of the data associated with your anonymous device ID by emailing us (see below); uninstalling the app removes the locally-stored ID and on-device data.

Your choices & rights

• Turn off or downgrade location permission at any time in Android Settings → Apps → newt → Permissions.
• Turn off notifications in Android Settings.
• Request access to, or deletion of, data tied to your device ID by emailing [email protected].

As an Australian app we handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles. Where applicable (e.g. data processed in the EU by PostHog), we also support access/erasure requests under the GDPR.

Children

newt features venues that serve alcohol and is intended for people 18 and over. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18.
